Envisioned by newspaper giant William Randolph Hearst and designed by architect Julia Morgan, Hearst Castle began as a modest hilltop retreat, but ended up one of the world’s greatest attractions and showpieces for ancient art, one that still rivals museum collections around the world. Experience the 1920s and 30s grandeur that surrounded W. R. Hearst and his esteemed Hollywood guests at La Cuesta Encantada, Spanish for “Enchanted Hill”.
Old Mission Santa Barbara is situated on 15 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Mission grounds include the beautiful Mission Church, historic cemetery and mausoleum, a nine-room museum of historical artwork and artifacts, and multiple lush gardens. Established December 4, 1786, by Father Fermín Lasuén for the Franciscan Order. The tenth of 21 missions in Alta California, the mission grounds host a gift shop, museum, Franciscan Friary, and retreat house, and are owned by the Franciscan Province of Santa Barbara. The site also includes Saint Barbara Parish, renting the church from the Franciscans under the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and the Santa Bárbara Mission Archive-Library. The cemetery holds the graves of over 4,000 Chumash Indians.
Elephant Seal Vista Point A small stretch of beach located 5 miles north of San Simeon, California is the largest elephant seals rookery in the West Coast. The Piedras Blancas Rookery dates back to the 1700s when elephant seals and other marine mammals were hunted for their oil-rich blubber. By 1900, it was believed that the northern elephant seal was extinct. 20 years later, the seals received protected status in the United States and the population has slowly recovered in California.
Solvang meaning “sunny fields” in Danish, and known as the “Danish Capital of America” is recognized for its Old World architecture, unique boutiques, award-winning restaurants and historic museums. Learn about the area’s rich multi-cultural Native American, Spanish, Mexican and Danish heritage at prominent museums and the 1804 Old Mission Santa Inés, a national historic landmark. To appreciate Solvang’s Danish heritage, visit Elverhøj Museum of History & Art, which occupies an original Danish-style home of one of the city’s founders a few blocks from downtown. There is also the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and much more.
Blackwell’s Corner was named after George Blackwell, who started a rest stop in Lost Hills, CA in 1921. It quickly became a popular stopping point, providing travelers with fuel and food. Today, it’s a favorite pit stop for people passing through form all over the world, providing a bit of Americana with it’s 50’s themed restaurant and rich history.Blackwell’s Corner was the last place where Dean stopped before dying in a head-on collision in the nearby town of Cholame in 1955.
Murray Family Farms started in 1989, when Steve Murray bought 20 acres of land in Kern County, near Bakersfield. Since then, the farm has grown to 320 acres, fueled by the success of famously sweet grapes, extensive farmers market presence, and popular roadside attractions. Murray Family Farms is, as the name suggests, a family farm, with everyone contributing to the year-round operation. From day one, the farm has placed huge emphasis on growing a wide variety of items, growing 700 types of fruit and over 6,000 varieties.
