Tombstone, Bisbee & Kartchner Caverns Tour
Tombstone, Bisbee & Kartchner Caverns Tour
November 28 – 30, 2023
Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate. The museum is a great way to get a glimpse into the past of this western copper mining town. Learn about the hard life of the miners and their job of blasting, drilling and mucking miles of tunnels through the area. Bisbee is known also for its mineral heritage, which is displayed in a state-of-the-art exhibit created by the Smithsonian designers.
Lavender Pit Is a former open pit copper mine near Bisbee and the Copper Queen Mine. The open pit was named in honor of Harrison M. Lavender who conceived and carried out his plan for making the previous unprofitable low-grade copper bearing rock of the area into commercial copper ore. The mine operated from 1950 to 1974.
Bisbee Queen Historic Mine is one of the greatest copper mines in history. The mine started it production of copper in 1880. With almost 100 years in service, it eventually closed down in 1975. Our tour will take us on a ride 1500 feet deep into the old workings of the mine, on a mine tour train car. You’ll be provided with a rain slicker and hard hat, and as it’s very cool in the mine, you should be prepared to dress warmly.
Good Enough Mine in Tombstone filed its claim in 1878 and began its production 1879. It was Tombstone’s major silver producer. We’ll see what silver ore looks like, and enjoy a guided historical experience of how the miners worked underground. After the mine tour is finished, a trolley will take us through the entire town of Tombstone; to the Schieffelin’s Monument; both cemeteries, and the Mining District hills of Tombstone.
Kartchner Caverns is located in the Kartchner Caverns State Park in Arizona. The caverns were discovered in 1974 by cavers. The cave is more than 2.5 miles long. There are 2 large caverns that are accessible: the Throne Room and the Big Room. Our 1 1/2 hr. tour will take us into the Throne Room that features the world’s longest soda straw stalactites and a high column called Kubla Kahn. It’s a must see!
